Pennsylvania Politics -- Santorum Stays Mum on Miers

Trailing by 18 points in the polls, Rickey Santorum has taken a page from his opponent, little Bobby Casey, and has finally shut up. He refuses to take a stand on the controversial Miers nomination, saying that he just doesn't know enough about her to make a judgment. Funny, ignorance hasn't stopped him from mouthing off before.

Actually, Rickey is caught in something of a quandry. His advisors are urging him to distance himself from Bush, whose polls are low right now, but polls also show that Santorum is viewed as too conservative, too controversial, and too polarizing and therefore cannot afford to be identified with the conservative ideologues who are taking the lead in criticising the President. In the circumstances anything he says hurts him, and with the deficit he has to make up he can't afford to make a false step. So he's saying as little as possible. Not a bad strategy, actually. Standing for nothing has worked pretty well so far for Casey.
