Beginning in 1943 Nazi officials sent photographers throughout the Reich to make a photographic record of the ceiling and wall murals of churches and castles. The effort continued right up to the end of the war and cost millions of reichsmarks. The result was a collection of nearly 40,000 high quality slides documenting art treasures and buildings, many of which were destroyed or heavily damaged in the last years of the war. These slides eventually wound up at Munich's Central Institute of Art History and now they are being digitalized and made available on the internet. There's some really spectacular stuff in the collection that can not be seen anywhere else.
